It's not easy being Steve

Every morning he starts with an hour-and-change of breathing through a nebulizer which delivers medication, and zipping into a specialized vest that loosens the buildup of mucus in his lungs. He can go only as far as the cord that connects him to the wall, and the hose connected to the nebulizer face mask allows.

After that he swallows the first of 50 to 70 pills for that day alone. CF-related diabetes also means his digestive tract is only partially effective at breaking down food, so he downs the first portion of a massive 4000 calorie-per-day diet.

Steve refuses to be held captive by this regimen. Most mornings he heads out the door for a bike ride or a run. In marathon training season, this can mean miles well into the double-digits.

The biggest thing I notice these days is my body is getting older, and the toll taken by going these distances is more noticeable. It ain’t pretty, but I’m still here.
